"Uttejan" means encouragement or to encourage.
Uttejan is a self help group for patients with Epilepsy & their caregivers conducted at IPH on the first Sunday of every month at 4 pm. It is an open (no charge) group & different issues related to academic, emotional & behavioral problems of these children are discussed & handled at group level. The efforts are made to contact key persons in seeking various concessions for admissions, academic concessions for these children who also suffer like any other disability due to illness & the side effects of the AEMs.
Epilepsy is a word that creates anxiety and instills fear in the minds of people. A common man understands that epilepsy just means 'to get fits', but this erroneous perception and myths about this condition have troubled many people. Five parents from Thane have formed epilepsy self help support group called Uttejan to fight against this condition. The group was formed under the aegis of the Institute of Psychological Health (IPH) two months ago. Parents of patients suffering from epileptic disorder (epilepsy a neurological condition) came up with the idea to cope up with certain difficult conditions, much more than only medical treatment which is necessary.
People who come across such patients need to accept the fact and tackle such people in a positive manner rather than blaming them. This group has been started for patients and their caregivers with the aim of giving support and empowering them to face various challenges with hope, patience, confidence and a positive attitude. The group can become a dependable source of information about the illness and related issues, and help in overcoming the associated stigma and social isolation. It will give hope and nurture skills, courage and confidence needed for resuming or continuing one's academic studies, career or social life. It will play a role in integration into the mainstream.
