Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy department deals with children having motor, sensory and cognitive issues. Occupational therapy deals with problems relating to the 'occupation' that is play and schooling. The clients that are referred for the services include children with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disability, delayed milestones, and childhood psychiatric disorders.

Occupational therapist use different approaches like Sensory- Integrative, Sensory motor, play therapy, cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches while dealing with clients in hand.

The therapeutic methods include use of play and creative media like swings, ramps, ladders, crafts and colors. Children feel safe and structured in the therapeutic set-up and make good adaptive response which shapes them to exhibit similar skills in the real- life situation. The therapy is individual client centered and coupled with home program. Suggestion include changes in the current home set-up, the school environment and the use of right kind of play and purposeful activities to make the environment conducive for the child's overall development also simultaneously working with the child to develop higher order skills.

Specialized treatment areas include training in gross- motor and fine motor skills, oro-motor skills, Activities of daily living skills, Visual- perceptual skills, and executive skills.

With increasing awareness about many childhood disorders occupational therapy has promising role to play in the rehabilitation of these children. Early detection and intervention designed by occupational therapist make vital contribution towards the overall development of the client; the only goal being making the client independent as much as possible and giving meaning to his/ her existence.
