Remedial Teaching

Special education refers to education given to remediate specific skill deficits in a child. Students with special needs need the same instructions as normal children, however different techniques related to the child's specific deficits increase the effectiveness of teaching special students.

In IPH, special educators work on these deficits the child has, as these deficits affect their academic progress in school. The deficits could be in various areas such as reading, writing, oral and written language, study skills, math. Initially after the formal testing is done, this with the help of the child's performance in school, their class work and current level of functioning, can come to a conclusion as to what types of techniques and tools could be used to overcome these deficits. The special educator also identifies the student's strengths and on the basis of this, forms a plan as to how the child can use his/her own strengths to achieve his/her specific goals. The remediation of these skills helps the children in academics and subject specific tasks in school.

Precise and clear instructions, easy strategies, modification and adaptations in the curriculum, breaking of the content into compact and easy tasks are some of the techniques used by the special educator.
